Alibaba Launches Qwen3, Outperforming DeepSeek R1 and OpenAI o1

Alibaba introduced Qwen3, a series of AI models designed to compete with the top models from companies like OpenAI and Google.

On Monday, Alibaba introduced Qwen3, a series of AI models designed to compete with the top models from companies like OpenAI and Google. Alibaba claims that Qwen3 can match or even surpass some of these models in performance. The models, which range from 0.6 billion to 235 billion parameters, will be available for download on AI platforms like Hugging Face and GitHub, allowing developers to use them under an open license. The Qwen3 models are designed to provide flexibility by offering both “thinking” and “non-thinking” modes, allowing users to control the speed and complexity of the responses.

Alibaba’s Qwen3 also incorporates a mixture of expert architecture, which divides tasks into smaller, specialized units handled by expert models, making it more computationally efficient. Trained on a dataset of 36 trillion tokens, the Qwen3 models support 119 languages and have demonstrated strong performance across a range of benchmarks. On platforms like Code forces, Qwen3’s largest model, Qwen-3-235B-A22B, outperforms other leading AI models in tasks like math and reasoning, although it is not yet publicly available.

The most accessible model in the Qwen3 family, Qwen3-32B, still offers strong performance compared to proprietary models like DeepSeek’s R1 and OpenAI’s o1 model. Alibaba claims Qwen3 excels in tool-calling capabilities and can easily follow instructions, which makes it well-suited for practical applications where models need to handle specific data formats and tasks. Qwen3 is available from cloud providers such as Fireworks AI and Hyperbolic, in addition to being downloadable for developers.

This launch is a part of Alibaba’s strategy to push the boundaries of open-source AI models, challenging the dominance of closed-source models from competitors like OpenAI. As global tensions grow, especially with the U.S. imposing restrictions on AI chip sales to China, Alibaba’s Qwen3 model offers a competitive, open-source alternative to closed AI systems.

Experts believe that Qwen3’s success reflects the increasing trend of open-source AI models catching up with closed systems. The CEO of AI cloud, noted that even with restrictions, models like Qwen3 will continue to be used both domestically and internationally, providing a new avenue for businesses to access cutting-edge AI technology.
