Google Moves Closer to Finalizing Agreement to Integrate Gemini on iPhones

Google and Apple are reportedly in talks to integrate Google’s Gemini AI into Apple’s ecosystem, specifically within the iPhone’s voice assistant, Siri. During a recent trial on the search monopoly, Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed that the company anticipates striking a deal with Apple by mid-2025, with the integration expected to be rolled out by the end of that year. This move would allow Siri to leverage Gemini’s advanced capabilities to handle more complex queries, similar to how Apple has already integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its systems.

The potential partnership has been in the works for a while. Apple’s senior vice president, Craig Federighi, had previously hinted at this possibility in June when discussing plans for Apple Intelligence, Apple’s AI platform. He mentioned that users could eventually choose between different AI models, including Gemini, as part of Apple’s vision for offering users more flexibility in selecting the AI services they want. This would enhance Siri’s capabilities, enabling it to answer deeper questions and perform more intricate tasks.

Pichai’s remarks came in response to questions from Department of Justice lawyer Veronica Onyema, where he confirmed that he had met with Apple CEO Tim Cook to discuss the future of AI and how Google’s Gemini could fit into Apple’s plans. Pichai described their conversation as a discussion about AI technologies and the roadmap for distributing third-party AI models, such as Gemini, on Apple Intelligence later this year.

The integration of Gemini into Apple devices is becoming increasingly likely, with additional signs pointing to its arrival. In February, references to “Google” as an option for Apple Intelligence models were discovered in the iOS 18.4 beta, suggesting that Apple is preparing to incorporate Gemini into its software. Similar to Apple’s ChatGPT integration, Siri will likely ask users for permission before utilizing the third-party AI model, offering a more robust, multi-model AI experience.

If this deal goes through, it marks a significant shift in the AI landscape, further enhancing the utility of voice assistants like Siri and strengthening the collaboration between two of the biggest tech giants in the world. The integration of Gemini could revolutionize how users interact with their devices, making them smarter, more efficient, and capable of responding to complex queries with ease.
