Meta brings Ray-Ban smart glasses into more European countries

Meta Platforms has announced that its AI-powered assistant, Meta AI, will now be available on Ray-Ban smart glasses in seven more European countries.

Meta Platforms has announced that its AI-powered assistant, Meta AI, will now be available on Ray-Ban smart glasses in seven more European countries, including Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Users in these countries can interact with Meta AI using voice commands to get answers to various questions, further expanding the smart glasses’ functionality. The announcement follows Meta’s recent push to grow its AI presence in Europe, which was initially delayed by regulatory and privacy concerns. (Source: Reuters)

Meta first introduced its AI assistant in the United States in 2023. The European rollout was slower due to the region’s strict privacy and data protection requirements, particularly under EU rules. However, Meta AI officially launched in Europe in March, and the company is now extending its reach with new features on its wearable devices.

One of the standout features of the latest expansion is live translation, allowing users to receive real-time translations directly through their smart glasses. Starting next week, people in supported EU countries will also be able to ask Meta AI about objects they are viewing and get instant responses. This feature highlights Meta’s strategy to merge AI with wearable technology and make its products more useful in everyday life.

Meta updated the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses in December 2024 to include video and language translation capabilities. These upgrades are part of Meta’s broader efforts to attract new users and strengthen its investment in AI infrastructure, as the company continues to compete in the fast-moving market for consumer AI devices.

The push to enhance its wearable technology with advanced AI features shows Meta’s commitment to innovation, even as it faces regulatory scrutiny in Europe. The company had first revealed these new smart glasses features during its annual Connect conference in September 2024.
