OpenAI Launches “OpenAI for Countries” to Expand Global AI Infrastructure

OpenAI advances with Stargate project, which aims to be the backbone of the future global economy by building cutting-edge AI infrastructure.

OpenAI is taking a significant step forward with its Stargate project, which aims to be the backbone of the future global economy by building cutting-edge AI infrastructure. The project, which was first introduced in January with President Trump, Oracle, and SoftBank, is already underway with the first supercomputing campus in Abilene, Texas. More sites are expected to follow, as the company looks to expand its reach globally and assist other nations in building similar AI infrastructure.

Countries worldwide have expressed interest in developing their versions of Stargate, recognising the crucial role such infrastructure will play in shaping future economic growth. OpenAI believes AI will scale human ingenuity and lead to greater prosperity by making it easier for people to learn, think, create, and produce. The company is also dedicated to ensuring that the development and deployment of AI are guided by democratic principles, such as individual freedom and a free market, which will encourage competition and the widespread distribution of AI benefits. OpenAI sees partnering with the US government as key to advancing this vision.

As part of its effort, OpenAI has launched OpenAI for Countries, an initiative within the Stargate project, designed to support global democratic AI efforts. This programme will help countries build secure data centres to protect their data sovereignty while fostering local industries. The initiative also aims to offer customised AI tools, such as ChatGPT, that cater to each country’s unique needs, ensuring a more personalised approach to healthcare, education, public services, and more.

Security and safety will remain top priorities as OpenAI continues to evolve its AI models. The company is committed to developing and implementing robust security measures for its AI systems while adhering to global standards for AI safety and human rights. OpenAI also plans to collaborate with partner countries to create a national start-up fund to nurture AI ecosystems, generate jobs, and stimulate economic growth.

Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to engage with at least ten countries or regions as part of the first phase of OpenAI for Countries. This expansion will help strengthen the global network for democratic AI and further solidify US-led leadership in the AI space. OpenAI aims to create a world where AI is developed and deployed to benefit all nations, fostering innovation, equity, and progress.
