One Reddit thread titled “GPT‑5 is horrible” racked up over 4,600 upvotes and 1,700 comments.

Some users went even harder, dubbing GPT‑5 “the biggest piece of garbage even as a paid user,” saying the new model lacks the personality and creativity of GPT-4.

According to Ewan Morrison, experienced users are driving much of the backlash. Their advanced familiarity with AI reveals limitations in GPT-5 that casual users might overlook, from dropped functionality to slower problem-solving, making their criticism especially sharp.

In a post on X, Sam Altman admitted GPT‑5’s rollout was bumpy, something that stemmed from a glitch in the “autoswitcher” (the system that chooses which sub-model answers each prompt). He pledged improvements and acknowledged user desires for the character of GPT‑4o.

Within a day of the backlash, OpenAI reinstated GPT‑4o as an option for Plus users, promising to monitor usage and refine how legacy models are supported.
