The UAE is making a bold move to equip its future generations with essential skills for the world of artificial intelligence (AI). Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, announced that AI will be introduced as a subject in all government schools across the UAE, from kindergarten to grade 12. This educational initiative is aimed at giving students a deep understanding of AI, focusing on both its technical aspects and the ethics of its use. The new curriculum is designed to prepare students for a rapidly evolving future, where AI will play a central role in both work and daily life.
The new AI curriculum will cover seven key areas: foundational concepts, data and algorithms, software use, ethical awareness, real-world applications, innovation and project design, and policies and community engagement. It will be adapted to different age groups, with younger children exploring AI concepts through play and interactive activities. As students progress through their education, they will learn to design their own AI systems, understand algorithmic bias, and delve deeper into ethical considerations. By the time students reach high school, they will be prepared to work with AI in practical, real-world scenarios, honing skills for higher education and the workforce.
AI will be taught as part of the Computing, Creative Design, and Innovation subject, with tailored lesson plans and activities provided to teachers. This strategic decision is in line with the UAE’s broader vision of AI as a cornerstone of its economic growth. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, has emphasized the importance of global collaboration in maximizing AI’s potential and its positive impact on society. The UAE aims to lead the way in AI development, driving growth and enhancing quality of life.
The UAE government is also taking steps to integrate AI into its administrative processes. A new regulatory intelligence system powered by AI is set to accelerate the legislative process, cutting research and drafting time by up to 70%. This is part of a broader effort to leverage AI for efficiency and innovation across all sectors.
Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of Education, has highlighted the importance of integrating AI into the nation’s education system, calling it a “national imperative.” While she stresses the need for swift adoption of AI, she also warns that the capacity to use AI wisely, effectively, and ethically must be developed alongside its integration. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the UAE is preparing its students not just to understand AI, but to use it responsibly in the future.
