This discovery came from reverse engineer Nima Owji, who found code pointing to an upcoming tool that allows users to edit files while interacting with Grok in real time. If true, it would mark a significant step in xAI’s efforts to compete with the likes of OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft by integrating AI into everyday productivity tools.
Although xAI has not officially commented on the leaked editor, the company’s past announcements offer some clues. In April 2025, it introduced Grok Studio, a workspace that allows users to generate text, code, reports, and even browser-based games while chatting with Grok in a split-screen layout. Around the same time, xAI also rolled out a feature called Workspaces, which lets users organise files and conversations in a central location. These tools indicate that the company is quietly laying the groundwork for a broader AI productivity platform.
What makes xAI’s approach interesting is how it might differ from other companies. While Google’s Gemini can assist users within its suite of products like Docs, Sheets, and Gmail, it is limited to Google’s ecosystem. Similarly, Microsoft’s Copilot works within Word and Excel. xAI, on the other hand, appears to be moving toward a more open environment that combines file editing, AI chat, and document management all in one place, possibly within X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter.
There is still some uncertainty about which types of files the new editor would support beyond spreadsheets. It is also unclear whether xAI plans to build a full alternative to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. However, the signals suggest that the company is taking steps toward a more expansive digital suite. These developments align with Elon Musk’s broader goal of turning X into a one-stop app for everything, from messaging and payments to document creation and AI support.
